This project began with the request for a water garden. The client also wanted to feature the abstract steel sculptures of artist Gabriel Warren. When the site was originally cleared of second growth woodland, 5 boulders or glacial erratics remained, surrounded by the 18th century stone walls. The interplay of stone, moss, steel and water are designed to invite contemplation and meditation while evoking a metaphor of the larger landscape beyond.
The boulders became mountains, steel channels became rivers running through verdant valleys (parterres of moss), and the steel-lined pond evoked the ultimate watershed, a cove or the ocean. Meandering stone paths evoke the undulating edges of the pond. Native and ornamental plantings create seasonal color and interest.
