Working closely with a volunteer town committee, an ecologist and an architect, APA developed a Habitat Restoration Plan and a final Master Plan for a new park in Madison, Connecticut. The Master Plan converts a 42 acre abandoned coastal airport site, located on the lower reach of the Hammonasset River, into a town park with passive and active recreation including 20.6 acres of protected habitat.
The final plan includes three play fields, a concession building, an amphitheater, a kayak launch, pedestrian paths, parking and native plantings. Visitors experience nature through an extensive trail system (including a 10' wide path that references the old airport runway) including wildlife viewing platforms overlooking grasslands, wetlands, and a coastal forest.
