This multi-phased project included landscape renovation and enhancements for the main facility in addition to site planning for the new sustainably designed cottages. The ecologically based ethic and program of the facility meshed with that of the landscape architect.
The new entrance of the ‘Commons’ building included improved parking layout, accessible brick walkways, granite curbing, native shrubs and flowering trees as well as a seasonally dynamic fenced-in perennial garden. This garden animates the entrance, giving the facility a sense of place and the residents a gathering space for relaxing as well as gardening.
The Cottages at Essex Meadows offer independent living in a naturalistic landscape. The site was entirely cleared up to the edge of a second growth woodland and extensive infrastructure including drainage, circulation, utilities and geothermal wells were installed. The project restored the native habitat, weaving plantings between structures and providing residents with intimate views of wildlife and seasonal variation.
